does your website currently have...

  1. a single entry point at the top.
  2. a classic pyramid information architecture with layers of data
  3. a story like navigation and content that forces people to read the preamble before finding what they want
  4. no clear "call to action" for visitors

The vast majority of websites follow this structure and end up being static, ineffective brochures that deliver little of no quantifiable value.

but think a little differently...

On the Web Actions speak louder than words.
People visit websites with tasks in mind. Make your site about action, not words. Think about what people can do, not about what can people read. Make your site about the tasks they want to accomplish.

squash

Reduce the depth and complexity of your site.
People do NOT read on the web, they scan. Reduce and reorganise your content to facilitate efficient scanning. Always provide a "call to action" on every page. Not at the bottom but at the top.

  1. Have no more than three levels of depth.
  2. The home page should feature all major site sections.
  3. The second level of information should answer all of a users questions. With links of to PDF's for detailed info if they want to download and view later.

flip

Imagine you could turn your website on it's head and bring all the important information to the top. Well what are you waiting for?

In a previous issue of Fire in the Kitchen we talked about organising your site to suit your customers.

  1. identify your site audiences
  2. define your message to each audience
  3. most importantly give them something to do.

What is your website's "call to action" for each audience you're targetting? Make sure that call to action is featured prominently throughout the site.

push

GOOGLE is your best friend and is turning the internet and more importantly the advertising world on it's head. Dont be afraid of Google.
Pushing your site in Google allows you to

  1. segment your visitors before they ever get to your site
  2. present them with exactly what they are looking for in the form of "landing" pages
  3. track all visitor activities and set real and meaningful goals for your site

we won't bite...
